Seventh-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia was crowned champion of the eighth edition of the $50,000 Saguenay National Bank Challenger on Sunday.
Jabeur went up against second-seeded Coco Vandeweghe in the final. The American had been dominant since the start of the tournament having not dropped a set and lost only seventeen games in four matches this week. A hotly disputed first set went the way of Vandeweghe in a tiebreak, but Jabeur fought back to win her third straight three set match 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-3. Jabeur, ranked no. 166 in the world, beat the event’s top two seeds in consecutive matches over the weekend to claim the trophy. The 19-year-old has now won four ITF Pro Circuit Challenger titles this season and six in her career.
Jabeur joins an impressive list of champions at the Saguenay National Bank Challenger which includes Angelique Kerber, Alexa Glatch, Sofia Arvidsson, Rebecca Marino, Timea Babos, and Madison Keys.
