A new singles champion was crowned on Sunday at the tenth edition of the $50,000 Saguenay National Bank Challenger.
Playing in her second straight Saguenay final, crowd favourite Jovana Jaksic of Serbia, ranked no. 228 in the world, defeated Switzerland’s Amra Sadikovic 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 to capture the fifteenth ITF Challenger singles title of her career and first of 2015.
The 22-year-old led 6-3, 4-3 with a break before Sadikovic mounted a comeback to force a third set after playing an impressive tiebreak. Jaksic broke serve with her first opportunity in the final frame and raced to the title.
“This is my first $50,000 Challenger title and I am just so happy, Jaksic said after the match. “This is a huge deal for me because I have had a tough year with injuries and not the results that I hoped for. It’s not only an important moment in my career, but it gives me a lot of confidence for my next tournaments. “I love Saguenay and I can’t wait to come back and defend my title next year.”
Jaksic was playing in her first final since Saguenay last year.
